B8- Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where is the energy needed for photosynthesis coming from?
energy transferred from the environment to the chloroplasts by light
What is the photosynthesis equation?
carbon dioxide + water= glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H20 = C6H1206 + 602
Name 5 leaf adaptions for photosynthesis:
—- Broad- large SA to absorb light
—- Thin- short diffusion pathway for gases
—-Chlorophyll- absorb the light
—-Xylem and Phloem- xylem carries water to the
leaves and phloem removes
products of photosynthesis
—-Guard cells- open and close in the stomata to let
gases diffuse
What is the relationship between light intensity and distance?
light intensity= 1/ distance^2
What are the limiting factors in photosynthesis and what is a limiting factor?
limiting factor stops the rate of photosynthesis from increasing
- CO2 concentration
- Light Intensity
- Temperature- if the temperature increases 40-50 degrees enzymes become denatured
CO2 Concentration:
on a sunny day its the biggest limiting factor, tends to rise at night because in the dark the plants respire but don’t photosynthesise
How do plants use glucose?
convert to cellulose to strengthen the cell walls
converted to starch for storage
to make amino acids
making lipids
Why do farmers want to maximise photosynthesis yield?
the more a plant photosynthesises the more biomass it makes and the faster it grows
How does a greenhouse affect the rate of photosynthesis?
in a greenhouse the conditions can be more controlled, more importantly the atmosphere is warer
What is a limiting reagent?
Something that prevents the rate of photosynthesis from increasing past a certain limit
