B5: Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes.
What body conditions need regulating?
1) Body glucose content.
2) Water content of the body.
3) Body temperature.
Why do we have multiple automatic control systems in our body?
For homeostasis of different things.
What two things could be included in our automatic control systems?
1) The nervous system.
2) Hormones.
What is the order in an automatic control system?
1) Stimulus: Change in the environment
2) Receptor: Detects change.
3) Co-ordination centre: Receives and processes information from receptor cells.
4) Effector: This is either a gland or muscle, it carries out a response restoring the optimum levels.
5) Response: Either muscle contraction or gland secretion.
What 3 components do all automatic control system have?
1) Receptors
2) Co-ordination centre
3) Effectors
