B2- Cell Division Flashcards
What are chromosomes found in?
They are found in pairs
What is in stage 1 on the cell cycle?
Replication of DNA to form two copies of chromosomes.
Increase the number of sub-cellular structures such as mitochondria’s for the cell to divide
What happens in stage 2 of the cell cycle?
Mitosis-
Set of chromosomes are pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides
What happens in stage 3 of the cell cycle?
Cell division-
The cytoplasm and the cell membrane also divide to form two identical daughter cells
Why is mitotic cell division important?
Important for growth, repair, development and multicellular organisms
What do adult stem cells repair?
Dead or damaged cells when the cell cannot divide itself
What do differentiated cells divide into?
Divide to make more of the same cells
Are plant cells always the same cell?
No you can move one cell to a different place and it will re differentiate into a new cell
What can you make from a tiny piece of leaf?
Huge numbers of identical plant clones
Why is it hard to clone animal cells?
Most animal cells differentiate permanently early in embryos and cannot change back unlike plant cells
What can stem cells do?
Embryonic and adult stem cells can create new different animal cells and cloned.
What can stem cells help with?
To cure diseases and illneses such as paralysis and diabetes
Why would you use stem cells in plants?
They are used to make clones and helps produce rare plants, research plants and also for agriculture.
Why not use stem cells?
People do not like the fact that you are taking away a life for research purposes. It could also cause cancer/virus transfer and is very expensive
