B1: Vaccine Procedures Flashcards
Modified-live Vaccine
- Non-pathogenic strain, that needs to be mixed (dilute liquid with powder)
- needs to be used within first 20 minutes
Killed Vaccine
Pathogen in killed vaccine cannot cause disease
Antigen
Portion of vaccine that stimulates the animals immune system
Adjuvant
Added to killed vaccine to increase the immune response
Single-Valent
Vaccines containing antigens for only one disease
Polyvalent
Vaccines containing antigens for several diseases
B-Cells
Activated by antigens (attach to antigens sites) and create antibodies specific to pathogen
T-Cells
Stimulate immune/white blood cell response to pathogens
Protective Immunity
Occurs when an animal is exposed to the disease pathogen and mounts an antibody response that prevents the animal from becoming ill
Partial Immunity
Occurs when the immune system is not sufficient enough to fully prevent disease but does make the infection less severe
