B1 - Osmosis, Active Transport and Diffusion Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a dilute to a concentrated solution through a partially permable membrane
Dilute solution
A solution that contains a small amount of solute
Concentraed solution
A solution that contrains a large amount of solute
Active transport
The movement of substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution against a concentration gradent. Requires energy from respiration
Concentration
A measure of the amount of solute in a solution
Concentration gradient
The difference in concentration between two solutions of either side of a membrane
Diffusion
The spreading out of particles resulting in a net movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Partially permable membrane
A membrane that allows small molecules to pass across it (e.g. water) but does not allow the passage of lare molecules (e.g. solutes)
