Axial Skeleton Flashcards
Parts of the Axial Skeleton
Skull, Vertebral Column, Thoracic Cage
The only moveable bone of the skull
Mandible
3 Spaces of the Skull (includes word for “ditch”)
anterior cranial fossa, middle cranial fossa, and posterior cranial fossa (fossa
Paired bones that form most of the upper lateral sides of the skull
Parietal Bone
Bone that forms that lower lateral side of the skull (name is implied by location)
Temporal Bones
single, complex bone of the central skull. It serves as a “keystone” bone, because it joins with almost every other bone of the skull. The
Sphenoid Bone
bird-shaped bone that forms the roof and lateral walls of the upper nasal cavity, the upper portion of the nasal septum, and contributes to the medial wall of the orbit (
Ethmoid Bone
Immobile joint between adjacent bones of the skull
Suture
Cheekbone
Zygomatic Bone
formed by the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone and the vomer bone. The septal cartilage fills the gap between these bones and extends into the nose
Nasal Septum
U-shaped bone located in the upper neck. It does not contact any other bone and thus is not part of the skull . It works in swallowing and speaking,
Hyoid Bone
fibrocartilaginous pad that fills the gap between adjacent vertebral bodies
Intervertebral Disc
strong connective tissue bands that hold the bones at a moveable joint together and serve to prevent excessive movements of the joint that would result in injury
Ligament
Provides flexible strength and support for body structures. Also unites adjacent bones or provides cushioning between the at joints.
Cartilage
12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum
Thoracic Cage
