1873 gave settler 160 more acres of free land provided they planted 40 acres of trees (later reduced to 10). it was used to try to solve the problem of a lack of wood for buildings and fuel.

when was the pacific railroad act signed?

A

1862 the central pacific railroad company would begin in Sacramento and continue east across Sierra Nevada. Union pacific railroad company would build west from the Missouri river. Each company would be given 6,400 acres of land either side of the tracks for every mile built. Building was paused for the civil war but was continued in 1865. Mostly being build by chinese immigrant workers

when was Wild Bill Hickok known?

A

1865-76 he made his name as a gunfighter in 1865 but was hired as marshal of Aberline in 1871. Cowboys were banned from Aberline in 1872 meaning Hickok was not needed anymore, he toured with Buffalo Bill in 1873. He then went back to drifting from city to city in 1876 where he was shot whilst gambling holding what would be later known as the ‘dead man’s band’

1864-67 war was sparked by the discovery of gold in Colorado in 1859. the miners demanded the government did something about the indians who began attacking them in 1861. the Indians saw that the miners were breaking the Fort Laramie treaty due to settling on their land and were concerned on the effect this would have on buffalo

1864 Colonel Chivington launched an attack on a Cheyenne village. the Cheyenne flew a white flag but Chivington still killed over 150 men women and children
