autosomal linkage Flashcards
define autosome
any chromosome that isn’t a sex chromosome
define autosomal linkage
two or more genes carried on same autosome (not sex chromosome) which are likely to be inherited together
explain the relationship between autosomal linkage and crossing over
genes located on the same autosome are much more likely to be inherited together
the only reason they might not be inherited together is due to crossing over
why aren’t mendelian patterns of inheritance followed
linked genes will be inherited together (ie: they can’t randomly pair with another allele) as crossing over is less likely to occur
offspring numbers will not match typical mendelian ratios (ie: 9:3:3:1)
distinguish between autosomal and sex linkage
sex linkage only involves genes on X or Y chromosome and mainly affects males as they only have one copy
autosomal affects males and females equally
