Harsh, high-pitched

Over trachea or manubrium
Fine Crackles (rales)
Sound type: Discontinuous, high-pitched
Condition:
- Atelectasis
- interstitial pulmonary fibrosis
Course Crackles (rales)
Sound type: Discontinuous, med/low-pitched
Condition:
- Retained secretions (e.g. pneumonia, pulmonary edema)
High/Medium pitched Wheeze (rhonchi)
Sound type: Continuous
Examples:
- Bronchospasm (e.g. asthma, COPD)
Low pitched Wheeze (rhonchi)
Sound type: Continous
Examples:
- Retained secretions in larger airways (e.g. bronchitis)
Bronchial breath sound
Examples:
- Consolidated pneumonia
- lobar collapse
- atelectasis
Decreased or absent
Examples:
- Over pleural effusion
- hemothorax, pneumothorax
- emphysema
- contused lung
- obese
- elderly
Percussion: Dull
Examples:
- consolidation (e.g. pneumonia, atelectasis)
- pleural effusion
- pulmonary edema
Percussion: Hyper-resonant
Examples:
- hyperinflation (e.g. COPD, acute asthma attack)
- pneumothorax
