attachment Flashcards
What is reciprocity in caregiver-infant interactions?
Reciprocity refers to mutual interaction, where mother and infant respond to each other’s actions, described as a “dance” by Brazleton et al.
What is interactional synchrony?
It’s when mother and infant mirror each other’s actions and emotions. Meltzoff and Moore found that infants mirrored adult facial expressions and gestures.
What did Isabella et al. find about interactional synchrony?
High synchrony between mothers and infants was associated with stronger attachment bonds.
What did Feldman argue about reciprocity and interactional synchrony?
Feldman noted that while both describe behaviors that occur simultaneously, they don’t explain the purpose behind them.
What did Schaffer & Emerson’s study find about attachment?
At 7 months, babies form primary attachments with mothers, and by 40 weeks, 80% had specific attachments, and 30% had multiple attachments.
What are the 4 stages of attachment according to Schaffer & Emerson?
1) Asocial stage (0-6 weeks)
2) Indiscriminate stage (6 weeks-7 months)
3) Specific attachment (7 months)
4) Multiple attachments (after 7 months)
