Q

How is ATP formed?

A

Energy from glucose is used to form a phosphate bond between a molecule of ADP and inorganic phosphate, ATP synthase catalyses this

Q

How is ATP Brocken down?

A

ATP is hydrolysed into ADP and phosphate, ATP hydrolase catalyses this reaction

Q

why is ATP a useful molecule?

A

releases a relatively small amount of energy, so little is lost to heat
it is a one step reaction so releases energy instantaneously
I can phosphorylate other components so it makes them more reactive
it can be rapidly re-synthesised so its readily available

Q

why is it important ATP is continuously synthesised?

A

ATP cannot be stored, it is unstable so breaks down easily
