Atoms, Magnets & Electricity Flashcards
atom
the smallest particle of any substance, also called microscopic building blocks
3 particle that make up an atom, what are their chares, and location within the atom
elctrons, protons, neurtons / electron - is negative, proton is positive, neutron is neutral
Protons - located in the nucleus. Have a positive charge.
Neutrons - Located in the nucleus. Have a neutral charge.
Electrons - Spin around the nucleus. Have a negative charge.
periodic table
find information about atoms of each element, you can find the atomic number, chemical symbol, element name, atomic weight
draw an atom square
x
describe each label in the squares on the periodic table
x
draw an atom with correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
x
what types of magnets used in class and what they are made of
bar, horseshoe, donut, cylinder - copper, nickel and colbalt
where are magnets the strongest
at the ends
one basic law of magnetism
opposites atract
describe static electricity
it makes friction so whatever you rub against it rises up
examples of static electricity
balloon rubbing on hair, socks on carpet
what is a conductor
lets electricty flow through it
what is an insulator
doesn’t let electricty flow through it
what is a resistor
lets electricty flow but not that much
describe a series circuit and a parallel circuit
series - 3 light bulbs and connect to battery
parallel - 1 light bulb, battery 2 other wires that go across
