atomic structure Flashcards
Anion
A negatively charged ion
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Cation
A positively charged ion
Continuous Spectrum
A continuous spectrum is made up of the full spectrum of light, like a rainbow, with each color merging into the next.
Continuum
A series of line becomes so close together that they merge
Convergence
The decreasing of the distance between lines in an emission spectrum as the energy of a set of spectral lines increases
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The range of all possible electromagnetic radiation
Electron Shell
The region of space surrounding the nucleus in which electrons may be found
Electron Arrangement
The pattern of electrons around a nucleus, written as a series of numbers each of which represents the number of electrons in an electron shell, starting from the shell closest to the nucleus, and proceeding outwards
Emission Spectrum
A line spectrum generated when an element is excited and the releases energy as lighht
Frequency
The number of waves passing a given point each second
Ground State
The lowest energy state of an atom n=1
Ions
Atoms that have lost or gained an electron
Isotopes
Atoms that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
Line Spectrum
Discrete lines that represent light of discrete energies on a black background
