asthma drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Why must LABAs be used together with an ICS?
A
LABA use down-regulates the expression of B2-adrenoreceptors on the lungs while ICS use up-regulates it.
Hence, it prevents the risk of asthma attack and the SABAs not working causing sudden death
2
Q
What are the 5 bronchodilators?
A
- SABAs
- LABAs
- Muscarinic receptor antagonists
- Theophylline
- Montelukast
3
Q
What are the 5 anti-inflammatory drug classes?
A
- Glucocorticoids
- Mast cell stabilisers
- Leukotriene pathway inhibitors
- Anti-IgE Ab
- Anti-IL5/IL4 signalling Abs
4
Q
What is the function of relievers?
A
Relief of bronchoconstriction during asthma attack
5
Q
What is the function of controllers?
A
- [LABA] Sustained bronchodilation to control risk of onset of acute asthma symptoms
- [ICS] Prevent progression from early to late attack
- [ICS] Prevent underlying ongoing inflammatory disease
3 - prevent further airway remodelling & mucous overproduction
