Assessment 1 Flashcards
what does salvation mean?
grace
which on the following is a form of private worship?
praying alone
2 beliefs about ascension
One belief about ascension is that jesus rose to heaven 40 days after he rose from he dead. Jesus ascended into heaven to be closer to god.
2 ways the church helps responds to persecution
One way the church helps is making charities to raise money to provide food or shelter. They also can say prayers for others
2 influences of the trinity
One way Christians are influenced by trinity is to feel loved and cared for. Oen part in the trinity is god the father who possesses qualities such as benevolence and caringness. This influences Christians to be aware of how much god loves them. It could also influence them to replicate Gods love and caringness onto other people such as giving to charity.
Another was Christians are influenced by the trinity is through the holy spirit. The holy spirit is known as the unseen power of god which is omnipresent. This can influence Christians to feel strengthened at all times as they know God is with them helping them through whatever challenges they may face.
2 examples of work of the church in the local community
One example of work of the church in the local community is the trussell trust. The trussel trust is a trust founded by Christians to focus on improving children sleeping on the railway in Bulgaria. By following the words of jesus in the gospel matthew they help and support people in need of shelter, food or other necessities .
Another example of work of the church in the local community is the oasis product. The oasis product us a project that aims to nourish the body, mind and soul and help those in need. The project was founded to offer advice to people who need help as they want to support people who are: locked in poverty, hungry, homeless and sick.
2 beliefs about the causes of sin
One belief about the cause of sin is the story of Adam and eve. Many Christians believe the result of Adam and eve’s disobedience to god led god to punish the for the actions. This punishment was to have suffering in life. In the bible it says, ‘The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.’ Meaning that because Adam ate the fruit form the tree, he was now aware of the concept of evil which causes sin. Many Christians believe this was the cause of sin as it was the first time humans became aware of the concept of evil.
another belief about the cause of sin is the devil. Some Christinas believe that the Devil causes people to sin or tempts them to do so like the devil tempted Jesus during his 40 days and 40 nights in the desert. christians believe that if devil hadn’t have temped them do do particular things then they wouldn’t have sinned so therefore they believe the devil is the cause of sin.
explain 2 christian reasons for work of reconciliation
one reason for work for reconciliation is to help other christians who are being persecuted. An example of this is a worldwide charity called Tearfund. Tearfund is a charity that works with 90,000 churches worldwide to lift people out of poverty. it supplies emergency aid for after natural disasters and conflict. it provides love term aid to help others. this is a reason for work for reconciliation as christians are helping others be at peace with a situation they may face.
another reason for work for reconciliation is for themselves. an example of this is confession to god and asking for forgiveness. this puts christians at a peace of mind/feel reconciled knowing they have confessed to god and said sorry for their sins.
an all loving God wouldn’t let suffering exist - evaluate statement
Some Christians would disagree with this statement claiming an all loving god wouldn’t allow suffering to exist and instead believe that suffering is a challenge for Christians and their faith to become instead stronger. This is evident in the bible when it says “when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” This quote is implying that that when Christians test their faith it ultimately ends up becoming stronger and a valuable lesson for Christians to learn. So therefore, Christians would disagree with this statement as suffering isn’t an act of god no being all loving but a test for a christians faith to grow.
In addition, Christians would also disagree with this statement as Christians believe suffering is caused by human fault. Christians believe that god has given them a gift of free however when they abuse the gift from god that is when suffering is caused – for example humans making bad decisions ending in someone or something to suffer. And example of this is in genesis when adam and eve disobeyed god so suffered with original sin. Therefore, Christians would disagree with this statement as it isn’t god’s fault that humans suffer but ourselves for abusing gods gift of free will.
However, on the other hand, some christinans would agree with thje statement that an all loving god wouldn’t let suffering exist. Some Christians feel suffering cannot be explained because god is believed to be benevolent and if he was then he would not allow innocent
people to suffer for example babies. Therefore Christians would disagree with this statement as is suffering exists surely god cannot be all-loving as so many people who don’t deserve to experience suffering.
Furthermore chrisians would agree with this statement as not all suffering is caused by humans so how can an all lobving god put humans through suffering when it isn’t due to bad descisions. Most natual distasters are not caused by any human actions however still cause so many to suffer. So because these disasters are not caused by humans, an all loving god would take control of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc to prevent us humans from suffering.
In conclusion, having weighing up both sides of the argument, it is evident that an all loving god surely can’t exist in presence of suffering it the world. God is known to possess 3 qualities however if suffering exists he can’t have all three.
the Lord’s prayer is the only prayer christian’s need to use”
Some christians would agree with this statement as the lords prayer is the prayer that is known to be the greatest prayer of all Christians. This prayer is known as the perfect prayer as jesus taught this prayer. Jesus taught this prayer to his disciples and gave a direct command to pray this way. Since it comes directly from Jesus, it links all Christians from all times back to Jesus so therefore, is all christians need to use as it’s the only prayer that directly links to jesus and is the one that he taught us specifically.
In addition, the Lord’s prayer is known as the perfect prayer because as it includes all different aspects that different prayers have. This is evident in the prayer at different points such as “Hallowed be your name” this is when Christians are giving god praise and acknowledgement, ‘give us today our daily bread’ this is when Christians are asking god for daily support, ‘forgive us our sins’ when Christians are asking god for forgiveness. From this Christians will agree with this statement as this prayer has all what a Christian will ever pray for included so this is the only prayer they would need.
However, some Christians would disagree as they would prefer to communicate in a more personal way. Although the lords prayer addresses all different types of prayers it doesn’t specify in one particular area. a Christian may be going through hard time in jus one particular area so would want their prayer to focus on that to receive more specific support from god. Therefore the lords prayer isn’t the only prayer Christians need to use as different people go through different siuations that god may need to offer guidance with rather than a brief going over it.
Furthermore, some Christians would disagree with this statement as nowhere in the bible does it exaggerate that the lords prayer should be the only one that Christians should use. In the bible it says in the gospel opf matthew, This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven…” specifying that jesus told Christians that they should pray using the lords prayer however in the bible it does not mention that any other form of prayer is unacceptable, leading Christians to believe that praying in different forms is acceptable. Therefore, Christians would disagree with this statement as the bible doesn’t specify that the lords prayer is the only prayer Christians need.
In conclusion the argument with the most support is the disagree argument as th ebible does not specify that the lords prayer is the only prayer christians need so therefore they should pray however they want.
