A long, narrow mark or band.
tone
How light or dark a shape/object is.
shape
The outline of an object or feature.
texture
The feel or appearance of a surface, how rough or smooth it is.
hatching
Lines placed over each other at different angles to build up areas of tone.
form
The 3D shape of an object.
mark making
Any mark that is placed on a page. This can be organised or random and in any material. It can be used to show different textures.
stippling
The art or process of drawing, painting, or engraving using numerous small dots or specks.
scribbling
To draw something using a line that is rushed or untidy.
contour
An outline representing or bounding the shape or form of something.
contour lines
Lines wrapping around the surface to show the form of an object.
construction lines
Light sketching lines that are used to plan out a drawing.
rendering
The accurate reproduction of light and shadow.
graduated tone
When tone changes gradually from light to dark and vice versa.
directional shading (or contour shading)
Curving your shading to describe the surface of a form.
