Trick for fraction/decimal conversion
1) multiply numerator and denominator by same number, so that denominator = 100
2) If fraction with denominator is multiple of 10 - write as product of two fractions
i.e. 1/20 = (1/2) (1/10) = (.5)(10^-1)=.05
How to compare fractions
1) Set up proportion and use cross multiplication
2) Use number sense (recognize when ugly fraction close to friendly fraction)
3) Convert fractions so that denominator is 100 (or close to 100)
Proportion cancellation rules
Can only cancel vertically or horizontally
What does it mean when the numerator is bigger than the denomenator?
The fraction is greater than 1
What does it mean when the denominator is bigger than the numerator?
The fraction is less than 1
Multiplying decimal by 10
Move decimal one to the right
Dividing decimal by 10 or multiplying by .1
Move decimal one to the left
Multiplying by positive power of 10
Move decimal right equal number of spaces to the power
Divide by positive power of 10 or multiply by negative power of 10
Move decimal left equal number of spaces to the power
Divide by negative power of 10
Same as multiplying by positive power of 10
