Wellbeing
‘Wellbeing is a complex combination of all dimensions characterised by an equilibrium in which an individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged.’

Social health and wellbeing
Social health relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
examples: Having a network of friends and family, being able to communicate effectively and being able to work in a team setting.

emotional health and wellbeing
Emotional health is related to the ability to express feelings in a positive way. it is about the positive management and expression of emotional actions and reactions as well as the ability to display resilience.
examples: recognising and managing a range of emotions, and having a high level of resilience.

mental health and wellbeing
mental health and well-being is the state of an individual’s mind or brain and it relates to the ability to think and process information. A mentally healthy brain enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic. mental health is about the wellness of the mind rather than illness.
example: positive self-esteem, high levels of confidence, low levels of stress and anxiety.

spiritual health and wellbeing
Spiritual health and well-being are not material in nature., but relate to the ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings. Spiritual health includes concepts such as hope, peace, a guiding sense of meaning or value and reflection of your place in the world.
examples: a sense of belonging, living according to your values, peace and harmony and positive meaning and purpose in life.

physical health and wellbeing
Physical health and well-being relates to the efficient functioning of the body and its systems, it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
Examples: healthy body weight, strong immune system, adequate energy levels and freedom from illness, disease or injury

the ability to recognise and respond to either others’ emotions and your emotions.

An individuals or populations overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectamcy levels of disease risk factors and amount of disablity.

standard statistics that are used to measure and compare health status

life expectancy
The number of years of life, on average, remaining to an individual at a particular age if death rates do not change. The most commonly used measure is life expectancy at birth.

Burden of disease
a measure of impact of diseases and injuries; it specifically measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability. Measured in DALY

ill health in an individual and levels of ill health within a population (often expressed through incidence, prevalence).

relates to unpleasent feelings and emotionss that affect an individual’s level of functioning. measured by K10 scale.

core activity limitation
when an individual needs help with self-care, mobility and communication; can be described at four different levels- profound>severe> moderate>mild. described as profound core activity limitation.
