8
Q

What are the steps of GABA?

A

Cl- ion channels appear on nerve cells

GABA opens and changes the shape of the ion channels

Negative ions are let into the cell –> hyperpolarization

Action potentials are inhibited –> brain is calmed down

13
Q

What is a SSRI and how does it work?

A

Serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor - inhibits the reuptake (reabsorption and destruction) of serotonin so there’s more serotonin in the brain

16
Q

Side effects of SSRIs

A

GI disturbances, sexual dysfunction, weight gain, and sleep disturbances

17
Q

What is a B-adrenergic antagonist and how does it work?

A

B-blocker - prevents NE from binding to amygdala’s B-adrenergic receptors so it can’t make emotional memories

18
Q

What is a common b-adrenergic antagonist?

A

propranolol

19
Q

Side effects of B-adrenergic antagonist

A

Worsens asthma - reduces airway dilation

increases HYPOglycemia - suppresses glycogenolysis and tachycardia

depression, fatigue, sexual dysfunction
