Malaria meds
chloroquine, malarone, primequine, quinine, mefloquine, atovaquone
chloroquine
1st line, prophylactic, pruritis major side effect
malarone
prophylaxis, can cause NVD, rash. interacts with tetracycline
Primequine
primarily post-exposure prophylactic, not for pregnant women or G6PD deficient
Quinine
natural drug. narrow therapeutic window! fatal dose 2.8 g. Commonly causes cinchonism. can also treat leg cramps
mefloquine
prophylaxis must start 2 weeks before traveling, take once a week while there and 4 weeks after. can cause neuropsychiatric rxn
atovaquone
pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia
Miltefozine
lieshmaniasis
metronidazole
indicated for amebiasis, giardiasis, rosocea. forms free radicals inside the cell leading to lysis. Causes CNS, NVD, cramps, HA, dysgeusia, black hairy tongue
Tinidazole
indicated for trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, amebiasis, giardiasis
paromomycin
2nd line for intestinal amebiasis, cryptosporidium, giardiasis
