Anti-parasitic Flashcards
Mebendazole
For thread worm (worms)
Starves nematode of glucose
Metronidazole
Giardiasis- Gardia lamblida
What is a tertian fever?
3 days fever then chills due to plasmodium life cycle
Malaria
Why is malaria hard to treat?
Has a life cycle in the liver and the rbc
Chloroquine
Malaria
Stops haem being polymerased so haem remains toxic
Quinidine
Same as chloroquine but more lipid soluble
Stops haem polymerase
Arrhythmia, n&v, hypotension
IV
Artemisinin
Sever plasmodium falciparum malaria
Free radical damage by haem activation
Take soon after
Proguanil
Inhibits dihydrofolate reductase in malaria
Use as prophylaxis with chloroquine
Atovaquone + proguanil
Blood and liver forms of p.falciparum
Targets mitochondria + enzyme
Prophylaxis- difficult to build resistance against it
Doxycylcine
Use in chloroquine resistant areas of malaria
But use clindamycin for preg/child
Primaquine
Treatment or prophylaxis
Causes G6PD deficiency- haemolytic anaemia
Renal failure
Use alongside artemisinin
What can you use with primaquine to prevent G6PD deficiency
Artemisinin
