Ankle Anterior Compartment Flashcards
What are the muscles in the anterior compartment
Tibialis anterior
Extensor digitorum Longus
Extensor hallucis Longus
Peroneus tertius
What is the origin, insertion and action for tibialis anterior
Origin - upper 1/2 to 2/3 lateral surface of tibia and adjacent Interosseous membrane
Insertion - medial surface of medial cuneiform and base of 1st MT
- blends with peroneus Longus
Action - dorsiflexion of ankle and inversion of foot
What is the origin, insertion and action for extensor digitorum Longus
Origin - upper 2/3 anterior surface of fibula
- upper part of Interosseous membrane
- lateral tibial condyle
Insertion - extensor hood (dorsal digital expansion), base of middle and distal phalanges of toes 2-5
Action - extension of lateral 4 toes at MTP jts
- extension of IP jts
- assists dorsiflexion of ankle
What is the origin, insertion and action for extensor hallucis Longus
Origin - middle 1/2 of anterior surface of fibula and adjacent Interosseous membrane
Insertion - dorsal surface, base of distal phalanx of great toe
- slips to base of proximal phalanx & 1st MT
Action - extends all joints of great toe, mainly MTP joint
- powerful dorsiflexor
What is the origin, insertion and action for peroneus tertius
Origin (part of EDL) - lower 1/4 of medial fibula and adjacent Interosseous membrane
Insertion - base of 5th MT, medial and dorsal aspect
Action - weak dorsiflexor of foot (with EDL)
- weak Evertor of footy
