Animal diseases Flashcards
What type of disease is tuberculosis (TB) and what does it destroy?
Bacterial disease
TB damages + destroys lung tissue + suppresses immune system - body less able to fight off other diseases
What are the symptoms of TB? Who are more likely to be affected?
Persistent cough, weight loss
Ppl affected by HIV/AIDS are more likely to develop TB
Is TB curable?
Curable by antibiotics, and preventable by improving living conditions + vaccines
What is HIV/AIDS caused by?
Virus that targets T helper cells in immune system
Destroys immune system
How is HIV/AIDS spread?
Through bodily fluids - commonly in unprotected sex, sharing needles, etc
What are the symptoms of HIV/AIDS?
Swollen lymph glands, fever
Is HIV/AIDS curable?
No cure + no vaccine, but anti-retroviral drugs slow down disease
What type of disease is bacterial meningitis? Who does it mainly affect?
Bacterial infection in meninges (brain)
Can spread to body + cause blood poisoning
Young kids + teens 15-19
What are the symptoms of bacterial meningitis?
Blotchy red/purple rash that doesn’t disappear
Is bacterial meningitis curable?
Antibiotics can cure if delivered early, vaccines can prevent
What type of disease is influenza (flu)?
Viral infection in ciliated epithelial cells (gas exchange system)
Kills them, leaving airways open to secondary infection
What are the symptoms of flu?
Aching body, high temp
Flu viruses mutate regularly
Is the flu curable?
No cure but can be given flu vaccine to protect against changing strains
What type of disease is ring worm? How is it spread?
Fungal disease, different fungi affect different species
Contact with surfaces that infected people have touched spread it
What are the symptoms of ring worm?
Causes grey-white, crusty, infectious circular areas of skin
Not damaging, but can be itchy
Is ring work curable?
Antifungal creams cure it
What type of disease is malaria? How is it spread?
Protoctista - Spread through mosquito bites (vector)
Invades RBCs, liver, + brain
What are the symptoms of malaria?
Headache, confusion, high temp
Disease recurrs, making ppl vulnerable to other infections
Is malaria curable?
No vaccine + limited cures, but can prevent through controlling vector
Prevent through mosquito nets, long sleeve clothing
What type of disease is athletes foot? What is it caused by?
Fungal disease
Caused by form of ring worm that grows on + digests warm, moist skin between toes
What are the symptoms of athletes foot? Is it curable?
Causes cracking + scaling, which is itchy + may become sore
Curable by antifungal creams
