Angular Motion Flashcards
Define angular motion
Movement around a fixed point
Define torque
The rotational consequence of a force
Newton’s 1st law applied to angular motion
If ice skater is spinning in air, they will continue to spin until they land on ice when external force (torque) is exerted from ice on skates which changes angular Momentum
Newton’s 2nd law applied to angular motion
Greater the torque exerted, the faster the rotation will be
Newton’s 3rd law applied to angular motion
As a goalkeeper tips ball over the bar, they throw their arms up, which causes the lower part of legs to go back
Define angular displacement
The smallest change in angle between starting and finish point of rotation
Angular velocity
The rate of change of angular displacement
Define angular acceleration
The rate of change of angular velocity
Define inertia
A resistance to change in motion
Define moment of inertia
Resistance of a body to angular motion.
Once rotation occurs, the body will want to continue to turn about its axis of rotation
How does mass of body affect moment of inertia
Greater the mass, the greater the resistance to change and greater moment of inertia
Example of how mass of body affect moment of inertia
A bowling ball is harder to roll along ground than football, but once it starts rolling, it’s more difficult to stop than a lighter ball
How does distribution of mass from axis of rotation affect moment of inertia
The closer the mass to axis of rotation, the easier it’s to turn. Increasing distance of distribution of mass from axis of rotation will increase moment of inertia
Example of How distribution of mass from axis of rotation affect moment of inertia
Somersault in open position has ^moment of inertia than tucked as the distribution of divers mass is further away from axis of rotation, making it more difficult to perform
Define angular Momentum
Quantity of rotation a body possesses
Spin
