Anesthetic machine Flashcards
What color are the gas cylinders
Green - Oxygen
Blue - Nitrous Oxide
Yellow - Compressed air
What is the purpose of the Anesthetic machine (four things)
Delivery of controlled oxygen
Delivery of safe anesthetic concentrations, Removal of exhaled CO2
Assisting in ventilation
The oxygen tank start at what PSI
2200 psi
What are the four basic components of the Anesthesia (Ax) machine
compressed gas source, regulator, flow meter, vaporizer
What rule of thumb helps you set up an Ax machine?
Always follow the Oxygen
Gas cylinders are made of what material?
Steel, alloy, or aluminum
What does the Oxygen do?
Delivers O2 to the patient for metabolic requirements
Acts as carrier for the anesthesia agent
When should the O2 tank be changed?
When pressure gauge reads 100-200 psi
Large oxygen tanks are labeled with what letters?
H & K and are usually connected to central systems
Small tanks are labeled with what letter?
E and affix to the machine
What does the pressure gauge indicate?
Amount of pressure in the tank
What does the regulator do?
Decreases the pressure coming from the tank (2200psi) into the line (40-50psi)
Should tanks be changed during a procedure?
No, check and change before if gauge reads 100-200 psi.
What color are Nitrous Oxide tanks
Blue
What psi do Nitrous Oxide tanks start at?
750 psi. The pressure gauge reads only the gas not the liquid.
Nitrous Oxide tanks contain what?
Both a gas and liquid
At what psi should a Nitrous Oxide tank be changed?
500 psi
What does the flow meter do?
Further reduces the gas pressure of the gas to 15 psi. This is close to atmospheric pressure.
The flowmeter regulates how much O2 is entering the system and being delivered to the patient.
What measurement are flow rates expressed in?
L/min
What is a chamber O2 flow rate?
5 L/min
What is a mask O2 flow rate?
2 L/min
How do you calculate an introduction flow rate for a patient >7kg
30 ml/kg/min
How do you calculate an introduction flow rate for a patient <7kg?
<7kg- 200ml/kg/min *Never less than 1L per minute
What function does the fast flush valve have?
This allows quick infusion of only O2 into the breathing circuit.
