Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
What is anatomy?
It is the study of the body’s structures.
What are your internal organs sometimes called?
Viscera
What is viscera?
Every internal organ you have. ie. your lungs, heart, and intestines.
Where is your spinal cord?
Housed in a stack of disc-shaped bones called vertebrae that protect it.
Define vertebrae.
Every series of small bones that form the backbone, have several projections for articulation and muscle attachment, and a hole through which the spinal cord passes.
What is the function of your spinal cord?
It connects your brain to the rest of your body; the spinal cord houses all the nerves that give you your senses, and tells each muscle where to move and how much.
What is physiology?
It is the study of how the body functions.
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of a stable internal environment.
What does the chemical level of the body consist of?
Atoms and molecules
What is tissue?
Tissues form by joining two or more cells together.
What are organs?
Organs form by joining two or more tissues together.
Multiple organs combined is called?
Organ systems
Joining organ systems creates?
An organism
