Amendment 16
Instead of state legislators choosing senators, people directly vote for their senators in elections.
Amendment 17
Banned the manufacturing, selling, and drinking of alcohol in the United States. (Prohibition period)
Amendment 18
Gave women the right to vote (suffrage), and made it illegal to deny voting rights based on gender.
Amendment 19
Changed the President and Congress’s start dates. The President and Vice President enter office on January 20th, while Congress starts on January 3rd.
Amendment 20
Repealed the 18th Amendment, allowing alcohol to be manufactured, sold, and drank in the United States.
Amendment 21
Limits Presidents to two terms in office (8 years), or a maximum of 10 years.
Amendment 22
Allows American citizens living in the District of Columbia to vote for presidential electors, giving them electoral votes in the Presidential election. Citizens of Washington D.C. can vote for the president.
Amendment 23
Made it illegal to charge people poll tax for voting in federal elections, making sure voting is free for all citizens.
Amendment 24
In case of the President’s removal from office or his death or resignation, the Vice President becomes President. Explains how a President can be removed from office if they are incapable of doing their job.
Amendment 25
Allows U.S. citizens who are 18 and older to vote. Given the right because of the Vietnam War.
Amendment 26
Congress can increase its pay but the raise does not take effect until after the next election.
