All of it Flashcards
What is the greenhouse effect?
When heat is trapped close to the surface of Earth by greenhouse gasses.
What is a greenhouse gas
a heat trapping gas
what are all the major greenhouse gasses? (we can meet new oceans)
water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and some artificial chemicals
What are the major cause of global warming
burning fossil fuels
can you control the greenhouse effect
We can’t control the natural greenhouse affect, but it an be enhanced
What are 5 effects of global warming
Higher wildlife extinction rates.
more frequent and severe weather and storms.
ocean acidification.
higher sea levels
dirty air.
what is contributing to an increase in CO2
deforestation- cutting tress removes CO2 from atmosphere
why is a slight increase in global temp. significant
a slight decrease in temp (even 2 degrees) can cause a mini ice age, so and increase of the same amount will be significant as well
explain the steps of global warming
- solar radiation reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some is reflected to space
- the rest of the suns energy is absorbed by land and oceans heating the earth
- heat radiates from earth towards space
- SOME of this heat is trapped by greenhouse gasses, keeping the earth warm
- human activities increase the amount of greenhouse gasses released into atmosphere
- extra heat is trapped, warming up earth
( comes in, absorbed, reflects out, trapped, humans increase it, extra heat stays)
why do we have a very cold winter in the northeast with global warming
Because there can be cold spots and cold winters, but warm places are even warmer causing the overall temperature on earth to be hotter.
why do we need greenhouse gasses?
Keep the earth warm
why is the increase of greenhouse gasses a large issue?
causes climate change and increase in global temperature
can having to many cows cause global warming?
yes, they add methane
the gradual increase in the temperature of the atmosphere is….
GLOBAL WARMING
what is the worst greenhouse gas humans are producing
carbon dioxide
how does global warming cause sea levels to rise?
by melting glaciers and ice caps
why does cutting down trees increase global warming
because trees soak up carbon dioxide
what happened if more greenhouse gasses are released into the atmposhere
temp. goes up
without greenhouse affect, earth would be…..
cold
diff. between global warming and greenhouse gasses?
global warming is a CHANGE in the Earth’s climate causing it to heat up, greenhouse effect is a natural process.
in the graph, what is your conclusion?
as carbon dioxide concentrations increase, temp increase (double increase)
what is the mixture of gases surrounding earth?
atmosphere
do greenhouse gasses allow sunlight to enter, but trap heat in the atmosphere?
yes
do human activities have effect on the greenhouse affect?
yes
