A

Non specific symptoms:

  1. Anorexia
  2. Morning nausea
  3. Dry retching
  4. Diarrhoea
  5. Vague upper right quadrant pain

What investigations are needed for ALD?

A
  1. FBC: may reveal macrocytosis
  2. Raised ¥GT: alcohol abuse
  3. ALT: hepatocellular damage
  4. AST:ALT ratio>2 suggests alcoholic damage
  5. Elevated serum IgA
  6. Blood alcohol

What is the management of ALD?

A
  1. Encourage reduction/ abstinence

2. Anticipate the development if withdrawal

How is alcoholic hepatitis treated?

A
  1. Treat ascites and encephalopathy
  2. Corticisteroids used
  3. NICE suggest Maddrey’ discriminant function
  4. DF of 32: liver biopsy/ offer cortcosteroids
  5. If hepatorenal syn: Antibiotics/terlipressin
  6. K, Zn & Mg given
  7. Vits B complex, C & K
