HSV1
A
Manifests itself by vesicular lesions on the mucous membranes of the skin.
3 stages:
- Primary
- Latency
- Recurrent infections
Pathogenesis: viral infection can be transmitted from a vesicular lesion or fluid (saliva) containing the virus to the skin or mucosa of another person by direct contact w/ incubation period of 2-14 days

A
Immunocompromised
Prior HSV infections
Exposure to virus

Common complaints of HSV1:
A
Painful lips, gums & oral mucosa

Other s/sx of HSV1
A
Fever, blisters on lips, malaise, and tender gums

Differential Diagnosis for HSV1
A
HSV1 Impetigo Stomatitis Herpes Zoster Steven-Johnson Syndrome Herpangina
Treatment: comfort measures, ice, Vaseline & other lip ointment
