Active/Passive Transport Flashcards
What is Passive transport?
It is where no energy is required to move a substance. Goes from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is active transport?
It is when you require energy to move a substance. It moves from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference between two area’s of concentration.
What is facilitated diffusion?
When molecules are to big to get through a membrane and require help from proteins. Use channel and carrier proteins.
What is the fluid mosaic model?
Proteins and carbohydrates chains can move freely through bilayers.
What is hydrophilic?
Water loving
What is hydrophobic?
Water fearing?
What is hypertonic, hypotonic, and Isotonic?
Hypertonic-losing water, shrinking
Hypotonic-gaining water, explodes
Isotonic- when a solute is equally distributed through out it
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water
