Act 2 Sc 3 Flashcards
‘Blanket my loins, elf all my hair in knots and with presented nakedness outface’ Edgar (2,3)
Edgar is in the woods because Gloucester is hunting him down to kill him because he thinks that he has disrespected him, he can’t run away because there are people everywhere waiting to arrest him and he knows this so he says he will disguise himself as a mad man by walking around naked and injuring himself and making himself look dirty etc.
Edgar I nothing am’ Edgar (2,3)
Edgar has had to lose his identity as Edgar and is now ‘poor Tom’, reminds us of Lear and how he is now nothing, Edgar is now losing his identity too. Also remind us of Cordelia as she first spoke of ‘nothing’ in Act1Sc1
disrupted hierarchy
This shows disrupted hierarchy as the ‘good guys’ have to run away whilst the ‘bad guys’ dictate and rule. Also remind us of kent - both kent and edgars lives are in danger because they are being perceived as disloyal when the are both in fact loyal, and both kent and edgar have to disguise themselves as someone of a lower rank than they truly are in society (mad man/servant)
