sets out the rules governing processing and use of personal information within the sector

the act covers information that is stored electronically and most paper based information

it is against the law to have photographs of service users without their permission
What must data be / not be?
data must:
- be kept accurate and up to date
- be kept safe and secure
- be collected and used honestly and fairly
- be used only for the reasons that it has been given
- be sufficient to meet the needs of the organisation
- not be passed onto other organisations without permission
- not be kept longer than is necessary
