Arbitrariness of differences refers to how differences are created by people/have as much worth as people give them.

Otherization means to treat someone as an outsider.

The class teacher begins the process of otherization against the out group.

The students begin to internalize the roles given to them by the teacher. This is very visible when the designated in group begins using differential treatment against the out group

The teacher creates a social hierarchy between the students using their eye colors.
How can we use authority to explain what’s happening in “A Class Divided”?
In “A Class Divided” authority or power was given to a specific group of people who have a designated eye-color which determines if a person is smart or dumb. The group of people who had the smarter eye-color had more authority, were able to enjoy more in the school and score better because of the confidence that they are at the top.
How can we use stereotype to explain what’s happening in “A Class Divided”?
Students were separated into two groups by their eye-color. Their eye-color represented that person’s smart or dumb. The people with the smarter eye-color started to discriminate against themselves from the other group and bullied them by calling them by their eye-color. This creates a misunderstanding of a person’s true character due to no logical reasoning.
How can we use differential treatment to explain what’s happening in “A Class Divided”?
People in the smarter eye-color group treated the dumb eye-color group differently than the people in their own group. They were bullying each other just because they had different eye-color. This also leads to social hierarchy as some feel they are at the top and some feel very low.
How can we use arbitrariness of difference to explain what’s happening in “A Class Divided”?
The children paid no heed to eye color prior to the teacher mentioning it. After that the students believed that x eye-colored people are smarter and y eye-colored people are dumb. Which is illogical
