What is the effect of the juxtaposition “I am not going to stand this sort of thing any longer. And therefore”

“and therefore I am about to raise your salary!”

A

This completely changes our views on Scrooge, and how he is as a public person. He seems to have received his karma, and how he understands that he wasn’t treating everyone properly.

Q

What is the sympathy of the quote “I mean to give him the same chance every year, whether he likes it or not, I pity him”

A

This is said by Fred.

The use of his sympathy portrays that Fred doesn’t really believe Scrooge wants to be this way, he believes that Scrooge is upset for a reason, and a very good reason indeed.

This can leave us with the fact that maybe if Marley had never died, Scrooge would not be acting this way and would have that Christmas spirit. This can make us pity him as he lost his wife.

The use of Scrooge’s desperation emphasises how he wants to know more, and seems to have concern and consideration of what is about to happen, meaning we realise that Scrooge isn’t as aware as we think he is

Q

What is the effect of the quote “for upon my life, I don’t know of anybody to go to it”

A

This is a quote said by a man when the Ghost of Christmas Yet to come takes Scrooge to his predicted funeral.

This symbolises how despite Scrooge’s future death, there isn’t any reason why anyone would want to celebrate, as Scrooge wasn’t anything like a nice, caring, noble man. He would only care for himself.
