9.1 - Mechanisms of Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is microevolution?
A
changing of frequencies in population leading to evolution
2
Q
What are the 4 factors leading to microevolution?
A
- Mutations (random changes in DNA)
- Gene Flow (flow of alleles in/out due to migration)
- Non-random mating (mating based on phenotypes or inbreeding)
- Genetic drift: change in allele frequency due to chance event
3
Q
What is the bottleneck effect?
A
decrease in pop. size due to a decrease in genetic diversity
4
Q
What is the founder effect?
A
When dispersed organisms make a new population away from original population
EX: Amish communities
5
Q
WHAT ARE THE 4 TYPES OF NATURAL SELECTION?
A
- Stabilizing selection: N.S favoring intermediates
- Directional selection: N.S favoring one extreme over another
- Disruptive selection: N.S favoring both extremes
- Sexual selection: N.S for mating based on competition
