Dengue virus (most common arbovirus, 4 serotypes)
Where is dengue fever endemic?
Africa, Asia, Indian SC
How is dengue virus transmitted?
Aedes aegypti mosquito
Which investigations indicate dengue fever?
Investigations usually normal
Diagnosed via dengue PCR and dengue serology (IgM)
What is the incubation period for dengue fever?
3-14 days
What are the signs and symptoms of dengue fever?
1st infection ranges from asymptomatic to severe febrile illness. symptoms last 1-5 days and improves 3-4 days after rash
Symptoms:
1. headache and myalgia
Signs:
- fever
- widespread maculopapular rash
How is 1st infection with dengue fever treated?
supportive only
What does re-infection with a different dengue virus serotype cause?
antibody-dependent enhancement:
- dengue haemorrhagic fever
- dengue shock syndrome (with non-blanching petechial rash)
