9/10: Plaque Flashcards
What is biofilm?
Layer of organisms that attach to a solid object
Where is biofilm present?
Present on plaque and then calculus with cessation of oral hygiene
What is dental plaque?
non-mineralized, colorless, removed with mechanical forces
What is alba?
white, cheese-like accumulation that can be displaced with water
What is calculus?
mineralized by calcium and phosphate
i. THIS IS NOT THE IRRITANT → PLAQUE IS
1. Cannot be removed with mechanical forces, only professional
What makes up calculus?
70-90% Inorganic, 10-30% organic → primarily calcium phosphate
What are the 4 crystal forms of calculus?
- Hydroxyapatite
- Magnesium whitlockite
- Octacalcium phosphate
- Brushite
What is the mineral source of supragingival?
Saliva
What is the mineral source of subgingival?
GCF and inflammatory exudate
Does all plaque progress to periodontitis?
No
What are the phases of accumulation of plaque?
- Formation of pellicle
- Initial adhesion of bacteria
- colonization/plaque maturation
Where does the formation of the pellicle originate?
In saliva
What is the pellicle comprised of?
Glycoprotein
How long does it take for the pellicle to condense?
7 days into mature structure
What is the significance of the pellicle?
- Protection
- Lubrication
- Nodus of bacteria
- Aids in attachment of calculus
