Q

What did Segall (1966) propose about why western cultures are more susceptible to the Muller-Lyer illusion?

A

Because ‘carpentered’ cultures are used to seeing buildings that have angles from intersections in the ceilings and floors. People automatically apply these learned depth cues to the arrows.

Q

In the Ponzo illusion, which line appears longer? And why?

A

The top line. This is because the false depth cues from the converging lines lead to the brain interpreting the top line as further away.
