8: Fungi Flashcards
Fungal hyphae
Filamentous multicellular structure -> can group together to form a mold
Yeast
Unicellular budding form of fungi, can sometimes form pseudohyphae (chains of yeast)
Spore
Reproductive single cell
Thermally Dimorphic fungi
Can have two forms depending on temperature (ex: hyphal form at 77 degrees, yeast form at 98 degrees)
How to dx superficial fungal infections
Skin scraping with KOH examination
Sclerotic bodies + a condition in which they are found
Protective fungi form that is resistant to immune reaction - chromoblastomycosis
Five common features of histoplasma, blastomyces, and coccidiodes
- Thermally Dimorphic
- Cause primary lung infections
- Cause granulomas
- Can spread hematogenously
- Show increased eosinophils in the blood
Bronchoalveolar lavage
Bronchoscope inserted to desired location in lungs, release saline into the area and recollect the effluent using a trap
Two ways to dx cryptococcus neoformans
Bronchoalveolar lavage, lumbar puncture
Staining for cryptococcus neoformans
India ink
Rhinocerebral mucormycosis
Acute sinusitis and nasal congestion -> progresses to involve palate, orbit, and brain -> rapidly fatal if not treated
Pulmonary mucormycosis
Nodular masses that look similar to invasive aspergillus, fever, hemoptysis
S/s of pneumocystis jiroveci infection
Fever, SOA, non-productive cough
Population affected by pneumocystis jiroveci
Immunocompromised, esp. AIDS
What infection is very similar to Tb and is commonly misdiagnosed as such?
Nocardia asteroides (bacterial)
