7.3 Fetal Lie Flashcards
What is an oblique lie commonly caused by?
A mass or extra fat in the pelvis
What does the word presentation refer to and what are they different types?
Refers to the part of the fetus that’s over the cervix
- Cephalic or vertex presentation
- fetal head is closest to the cervix - Breech presentation
- but is closest to the cervix - Acromial presentation
- shoulder is closest to the cervix (can’t deliver)
What are the different types of breech?
Complete breech
Incomplete breech
Footling breech
Frank breech
Which breech position is the most successful for delivering?
Frank
describe complete breech
Knees and hips are flexed and feet are level with the bum
bum is presenting
describe Footling breech
Foot or feet are lower than bum and are the presenting part
describe Frank breech
Hips are flexed and legs are extended with feet near the face (toes up the nose)
describe incomplete breech
One leg is extended and the other is bent… foot is level with the bum
what does the term position refer to?
the orientation of the presenting part of the fetus to the R or L of the birth canal
what do O, M and S represent?
O= occiput/back of the head (in a vertex/cephalic presentation)
M= chin/mento (in a face presentation)
S= sacrum (in a breech presentation)
what does the term variety refer to?
the relationship of the presenting part to moms pelvis..
anterior, posterior or transverse
why can a face presentation be dangerous for the fetus?
can cause neural tube damage b/c the neck is flexed back so far
is the fetus flexed or extended in the mento presentation?
extended
list the frequency of the presentation position
vertex: 96%
breech: 3.5%
acromium/shoulder: 0.4%
mento/face/chin: 0.3%
which combination of presentation position and direction is most common?
vertex position with the occiput directed to the left of the birth canal and transversely in moms pelvis… accounts for 2/3 of babies
