6.6 Menstrual cycle Flashcards
What hormone stimulates estrogen secretion in follicular phase?
FSH
What hormone stimulates LH secretion?
Estrogen
What hormones inhibits the secretion of LH and FSH?
Progesterone and estrogen
What hormone stimulates progesterone secretion?
LH
Where is FSH and LH secreted from?
The anterior pituitary
Where is progesterone and estrogen secreted from?
The ovaries
What hormone stimulates follicular growth?
FSH
What hormone stimulates the development of endometrium?
Estrogen
What hormone stimulates the thickening of endometrium?
Progesterone
What phase is the secretion of LH and FSH inhibited?
Luteal phase
Hormone that causes corpus luteum?
LH
Hormone where surge causes ovulation?
LH
What happens in follicular phase?
- FSH stimulates growth of several follicles
- Dominant follicle secretes estrogen
- Estrogen inhibits growth of other follicles (and FSH)
- Estrogen stimulates development of endometrium
What happens in ovulation?
- A surge in LH causes ovulation
- Rupturing of follicle creates a corpus luteum
What happens in luteal phase?
- Corpus luteum secretes progesterone and estrogen
- Progesterone stimulates the development of endometrium
- Progesterone and estrogen inhibits secretion of LH and FSH
- Corpus luteum degrades over time
- When corpus luteum degrades, progesterone levels drop
- Without progesterone, endometrium cannot be maintained
