5.6.1 Glycolysis Flashcards
1
Q
Where does glycolysis take place in the mitochondria?
A
- Cytoplasm.
2
Q
Is glycolysis an anaerobic or aerobic process?
A
- Anaerobic process.
3
Q
What are coenzymes?
A
- Not enzymes or proteins
- Molecules which help with enzymes.
4
Q
Describe how pyruvate is formed in glycolysis? (6)
A
Glucose is phosphorylated into fructose bisphosphate where ADP is converted into ATP. Fructose bisphosphate undergoes lysis to form triose phosphate. Triose phosphate undergoes oxidation and dephosphorylation to pyruvate where two ADP molecules convert to two ATP molecules releasing energy, as well as NADP converting into NADPH.
5
Q
What molecules are used up during the process of glycolysis?
A
- Glucose
- 2xATP
6
Q
What molecules are made during the process of glycolysis?
A
- 2xNADH
- 4xATP
- 2x Pyruvate
7
Q
Where do the products of glycolysis go?
A
- If respiration is aerobic, pyruvate from glycolysis enters the mitochondrial matrix by active transport.
- The NADH enters the mitochondria and is used in oxidative phosphorylation.
