5.2 Cell Metabolism Flashcards
metabolism
all chemical reactions of life
anabolic
making larger molecules out of smaller ones
catabolic
breaking down larger molecules into smaller ones
exergonic
releases energy
endergonic
requires energy
hydrolysis
breaking down larger molecules by adding water
synthesis
joining smaller molecules to create one larger one
ATP-ADP cycle
- ATP
- phosphate removed
- ADP
- phosphate added
exergonic graph
reactants have more energy than products
endergonic graph
reacts have less energy than products
anabolic: exergonic or endergonic + example
endergonic
dehydration synthesis
catabolic: exergonic or endergonic + example
exergonic
hydrolysis
ATP-ADP cycle: phosphate removed
exergonic and catabolic
ATP-ADP cycle: phosphate added
endergonic and anabolic
coupled reactions
- cellular respiration (exergonic) and ADP to ATP (endergonic)
- ATP to ADP (exergonic) and protein synthesis (endergonic)
exergonic reactions are not spontaneous. they require some initial input of energy. exergonic reactions must occur before endergonic reactions as the energy released is needed for the endergonic reaction to occur. energonic reactions are spontaneous.
