5 transformations Flashcards
What does the transformation y=2f(x) mean?
All y coordinates times by 2 (stretch in the y axis of scale factor 2)
What does the transformation y=f(1/2x) mean?
All x coordinates times by 2 (stretch in the x axis by scale factor 2)
What is the shape of a cubic graph?
-Starts Highest point in top right quadrant and ends lowest point
What is the shape of a quartic graph?
w shape
How can you derive the equation of a quadratic, cubic and quartic?
-y=a(x-b)(x-c)….
What are the types of reciprocal and which quadrants are they in?
1/x = top right and bottom left. -1/x = top left and bottom right
1/x^2 two top quadrants.
-1/x^2 two bottom quadrants.
What happens when the number on the top of the reciprocal is higher
-The curve is higher up.
What does the translation f(x+2) mean?
-Translated two to the left
What does the translation f(x-2) mean?
-Translated two to the right.
What is important about transforming reciprocals?
-Apply translations to asymptotes also.
What do you do if a function is x^2-x+2 and then it asks you to sketch x^2(x-2)+x(x-2)+2
-Apply the transformation f(x-2)
What is the transformation -f(x)?
- Times y coordinate by negative 1
- Reflection in the x axis.
What is the transformation f(-x)
-Times x coordiintebby -1 reflection in the y axis.
What is the transformation of f(|x|)?
-everything on right gets reflected to left
What is the transformation of |f(x)|
-Everything below goes up
