Define Palliative Care
the treatment, care, and support for people with a life-limiting illness, and their family and friends
Define Supportive Care
Helping patients and their family to cope with their condition and its treatment from pre-diagnosis, through the process of diagnosis and treatment, to cure, continuing illness to death and bereavement
Define End of Life care
The treatment, care, and support for people who are nearing the end of their life. (usually the last year)

How does the old concept of palliative care differ from the new?
palliative care is gradually phased in as the patient nears the end of their life

DiUPR is increasing at the expense of hospital deaths
Why might someone want to die in hospital?
better pain / symptom management to make death less stressful

What did a 2013 July review suggest about the use of LCP?
it should be phased out for a more individual care pathway
only a senior clinician should put someone on the LCP
a decision to withdraw / no start life prolonging treatment should not be made in an ‘out of hours’ period
an urgent call for the Nursing and MIdwifery Council to issue guidance on end of life care
end to incentive payments to use LCP
