5- aerobic respiration Flashcards
label
respiration
• The controlled breakdown of complex organic molecules (e.g. carbohydrates).
• It releases energy, which is used to make ATP (a source of energy for metabolic reactions).
• It generates heat, as some energy is lost in the form of heat.
stages of aerobic respiration
• Glycolysis.
• Link reaction.
• Krebs cycle.
• Electron transport chain → oxidative phosphorylation.
overall products from aerobic respiration
• 36-38x ATP:
- 2x ATP from glycolysis.
- 2x ATP from the Krebs cycle.
- 32-34x ATP from oxidative phosphorylation.
• 6x CO2:
- 2x CO2 from the link reaction (conversion of pyruvate to acetyl
CoA).
- 4x CO2 from the Krebs cycle.
• 6x water:
- 6x water from oxidative phosphorylation (when oxygen is reduced).
