5 Flashcards
Who are the 3 responsible parties for safety?
- Manufacturer- Boeing, Aribus
- Operator- BA, Ryanair
- Authority- UKCAA, FAA, EASA
What do the authorities do?
- Regulatory actions
- Fleet surveillance
What do manufacturers do?
- Design
- Fabricate
- Customer support
What do the operators do?
- Maintenance
- Inspection
- Repair
- Reporting
What are load cases?
Exact ‘estimations’ of external forces on the aircraft during its life. Relates to acceptance of risks
What are the unit of life times?
- Flying hours- Engines
- Flights- Rest of Plane
What is safe-life?
The no. of flights, landings or flight hours, during which there is a low probability that the strength will degrade below its design strength
When does fatigue become an issue?
- When design lives increase
- Increase in loads
- Imporvement of accuracy of methods (smaller safety factors)
- Application of stronger materials with poor fatigue properties, crack growth and residual strength
What is fail-safe?
An attribute of a structure that permits it to retain required residual strength for a period of unrepaired use after failure or partial failure on a principle structural element
What is damage tolerance?
The ability of a structure to sustain anticipated loads in the presence of fatigue, corrosion or accidental damage until such damage is detected through inspection and is repaired
What is Durability?
The ability of the structure to sustain degradation from sources such as fatigue, corrosion, accidental damage and environmental degradation to the extent that they can be controlled by economically acceptable maintenance and inspection programmes
Are virtula tests allowed for certification?
No
