what is meta-linguistic awareness
the ability to distance oneself from the content of speech in order to reflect upon and manipulate the structure of language
What makes language different from other ways of communicating
the duality of patterning-
Form- sound and handshapes, the “building blocks”
and combinations of forms- like combining sounds to make words
the arbitrariness of the sign,
there is no logical or intrinsic relationship between signifier and the word
What is the meaning of the word sign
anything that conveys a meaning beyond itself. it also refers to signs in sign language
what is displacement
Being able to talk about things that aren’t right here right now
What is reflexivity
The ability to use language to talk about language
What is phonetics
the study of individual sounds in spoken languages, or handshapes in signed languages
what is phonology
the study of how Languages combine these individual sounds or handshapes into words according to specific patterns
What is morphology
the study of how longer words can often be broken down into an internal structure
What is syntax
The study of how words group together to make sentences
What is semantics
study and talk about the meaning of words and sentences
What is pragmatics
meaning in a larger social context
What are different ways we can analyze the structure of these different levels of language, or the meaning that they create.
through sociolinguistics(how language relates to society ),historical linguistics (how language relates to history) or psycholinguistics(how language relates to the brain)
what is introspection
conscious attention volitionally directed by a language user to particular aspects of language as they manifest in his cognition
