4.3 Classification and Evolution Flashcards
What is classification?
The act of arranging organisms into groups based on their similarities and differences.
What is taxonomy?
The study of classification.
What is the 8 levels of taxonomic groups in the taxonomic hierarchy.
- Domain
- Kingdoms
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What system is used to name species and what is special about it?
The binomial system. Names are two parts and written in italics or underlined
What are the five kingdoms of classification?
• Prokaryotea eg bacteria
• Protoctista eg algae
• Fungi eg yeast
• Plantae eg moss
• Animalia eg mammals
What is evolution?
The gradual change in organisms over time.
What is phylogeny?
The study of evolutionary history of groups of organisms. Tells us who is related to whom.
What is variation?
The differences that exist between individuals.
What is intraspecific variation?
Variation within a species.
What is interspecific variation?
Variation between different species.
What is continuos variation?
When individuals in a population vary within a range but no distinct category.
What is discontinuous variation?
Where there are two or more dusting categories and individuals fall into them with no intermediates .
